The materials science discipline at Nankai University began in the 1950s. After decades of accumulation, it established the Materials Chemistry major in 1999 and began enrolling undergraduates. In 2000 and 2003, it obtained master's and doctoral degree authorization points, and in 2009 set up a postdoctoral research station, gradually building a comprehensive materials science system. In response to the national new materials development strategy and the rapid growth of the materials discipline, Nankai University established the School of Materials Science and Engineering and the National Institute of New Materials at Nankai University in July 2015. In 2017, the discipline of "Materials Science and Engineering" was selected for the national "World Y-Flow Discipline" construction list. In 2021, it was once again selected for the new round of "Double Y Stream" construction list.
